Fried Chicken, Whiskey Chaser - WSJ.com: ""I thought it would be kind of cool to make a fried-chicken shack," says Mr. Phan, who partnered with architect Olle Lundberg on Hard Water when space recently became available on Pier 3. The restaurant opened in April. In addition to Mr. Phan's signature dish of $16 fried chicken with pepper jelly, Hard Water's lunch menu includes a $20 seafood gumbo and a $12 gulf flounder sandwich with slaw and jalapeño aioli. Side items are straight out of the Deep South and include $7 collard greens, $6 grits and $5 black-eyed peas. Helping wash it all down is a drink selection that includes more than 150 bourbons and whiskeys, many stacked as decorations against a wall. One cocktail specialty is the $10 mint julep."

It’s a technique he learned from an absinthe expert in the South of France years ago. Expect herbs in a cognac base with vermouth and rum, several beakers, flames in a jigger, flames over thyme, flames on the beakers (to burn off the alcohol and give a killer show), and a final product poured into seriously stunning crystal coupes. Pizarro: Photography exhibit at Mezcal gets into the spirit - San Jose Mercury News: "In a perfect pairing of art and venue, Mezcal restaurant owner Adolfo Gomez is hosting a photography exhibit at the downtown San Jose eatery that's all about the culture and production of mezcal, the spirit. "From the Earth to the Spirits" is a collection of 25 beautiful photographs by Alejandra Cano that traces the creation of mezcal from the agave plant in the Mexican state of Oaxaca and follows it all the way to the cantinas where it's enjoyed. The Consulate General of Mexico's office co-hosted a cocktail reception -- featuring a lot of mezcal tasting -- at the restaurant Wednesday, where Cano talked about her work and mingled in a crowd of more than 50 people. The exhibition will be on display in Mezcal's courtyard through July 7."
